Technology (SST) Group, within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), OaknRidge National Laboratory, seeks to staff a research position focused onndevelopment and application of nondestructive assay (NDA) and data acquisitionnsystems to support R&D missions associated with safeguarding and securingnnuclear fuel cycle materials. The NND at ORNL is involved with improving thenprotection of nuclear materials and fuel cycle technology from theft,ndiversion, and illicit use, while at the same time allowing for the peacefulnuse of these materials and technologies. NND contributes world class research;ntechnology development and deployment that plays a vital role in thenimplementation of global nuclear security and nonproliferation agreements. Wenhave a range of expertise, facilities, and programs that focus on nuclearnsecurity challenges, and it is the combination of these activities that assistnin meeting the overall mission needs in this area. The mission of SST Group isnto perform research that leads to development of novel techniques, tools, andnmethodologies that ensures the capability to confidently detect, measure,ncharacterize, and track nuclear fuel cycle materials as they are processed,nstored, and transported. The research of the group specifically supports thenadvancement and application of technologies for nondestructive assay (NDA)nsystems, algorithms for measurement uncertainty reduction, measurements andncontrols software, tamper detection systems, data analytics for arms control,nand international and domestic safeguards. Many of the group s R&D effortsninvolve the advancement of state-of-the-art safeguards and security systems,nthe development of new technologies and systems that improve the timeliness ofndiversion detection, and assessments of verification technologies fornvulnerabilities. Partnering with a variety of subject matter experts at thenlaboratory, our researchers apply innovative solutions to address complexnnuclear material measurement problems both domestically and abroad in supportnof nuclear material safeguards, security, and safety. Main job responsibilitiesnfor the position include: Collaborate with project managers, subject matternexperts, and other researchers (mentors) to develop and apply new nuclearnmaterial detection and measurement capabilities to support global nuclearnsecurity missions. Research and test novel data analysis processes andnspecialized algorithms that improve measurement efficiency and reducenuncertainties. Provide subject matter expertise for domestic and internationalntechnical engagements and hands-on course and classroom training. Serve asntechnical lead on projects as assigned, working with customers to meetndeliverables and address and resolve technology or system issues. Document andnpublish technical work in high impact papers, journals, conference papers andntechnical reports. Collaborate in a team environment to develop and presentnresearch proposals to generate new funding. Ability to work independently, withnminimal supervision, and to work effectively as a member of an agilendevelopment team. Performance of work activities in nuclear and/or radiologicalnfacilities/environments. Ability to engage in domestic and international travelnas required. Basic Requirements Successful candidate will have a Ph.D innnuclear engineering, electrical engineering, or related technical field,.nCandidate will also have experience with code development and/or familiaritynwith various computer languages including C, C , and/or Fortran. Excellentnverbal and written communication skills and strong organization skills arenexpected. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearancenfrom the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace SubstancenAbuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-nplacement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing programnPreferred Qualifications Demonstrated understanding of NDA systems, bothntheoretical and applied. Practical/working experience with common NDA equipmentn(hardware or software components) used in the detection of uranium andnplutonium, data acquisition systems, or algorithm development. Demonstratednability to convert user requirements to effective algorithms and code. Workingnknowledge of measurement statistics. Wireless data transmission experience.nFamiliarity with domestic and international methods used for monitoring fuelncycle activities (associated with mining, milling, conversion, enrichment, fuelnfabrication, weapons and waste) Experience communicating technical contentnExperience with tamper-indicating devices and vulnerability assessments,
