We are seeking a Manager, R&D Science and Engineering to manage a team of mechanical designers, engineers, technologists, and support staff responsible for sustaining and developing next generation secure transportation systems. The Mechanical Systems and Design Department addresses engineering issues related to ensuring the current SafeGuards Transporter (SGT) fleet is fully operational, including development of detailed mechanical design of the next generation Mobile Guardian Transporter (MGT). Both SGT and MGT projects are high visibility, multi-year efforts which go from concept development to fielded product, system assessment and surveillance, engineering updates, to demilitarization and retirement.
On any given day, the selected applicant may be called on to:
Provide direction on decisions affecting the viability of the SGT fleet
Help develop a technology roadmap for the capability enhancement of the department
Work with the Office of Secure Transportation (OST) customer on matters affecting fleet operations
Collaborate with other managers to allocate resources (space and staff)
Closely partner with other departments throughout Sandia to effectively use the capabilities of the high bay lab
Coordinate a 24/7 response team responding to OST mission needs
Manage staff, including professional development, work assignments, and assessment and performance management, consistent with the mission of the organization
Lead all aspects of safe operations of the high bay, which may entail performance of hazardous operations vital for fulfilling mission requirements
Provide Derivative Classifier support
Masters or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM field plus four years' related technical experience
Two years of proven leadership experience
Experience leading diverse technical teams and collaboration with teams resulting in a positive outcome
Experience developing visions and opportunities for growing mission capabilities
Strong interpersonal skills and history of developing positive relationships with staff, peer managers, and internal/external partners
Experience with effective professional development of staff
Proficiency in nuclear weapon design particularly nuclear weapon safety
Knowledge of structural analysis, material science and modeling and simulation of complex structures
Experience planning strategy, creating roadmaps, developing partnerships, forming teams, mentoring, and encouraging others to perform with excellence
