Job Summary

Purpose and Scope:

The Auto Body/Metal Repairer Worker repairs damaged bodies and body parts of automotive vehicles, such as automobiles, buses, and light trucks according to repair manuals, using hand tools, and power tools. Removes upholstery, accessories, electrical and hydraulic window, seat-operating equipment, and trim to gain access to vehicle body and fenders. Positions block against surface of dented area and beats opposite surface to remove dents using hammers. Fills depressions with solder or other plastic materials. This worker removes damaged fends, panels and grills using wrenches and cutting torch. Bolts, welds, and straightens bent frames using hydraulic jack and pulling devices. Files, grinds and sands repaired surfaces using power tools and hand tools. Refines repaired surfaces using paint spray gun and sander. Align wheels, aims headlights, bleeds hydraulic brake systems, and paint surface after performing body repairs.

Assignments will involve responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project of relatively limited scope or a portion of a larger and more diverse project. Supervisor outlines objectives, requirements, and design approaches; completed work is reviewed for technical adequacy and satisfaction of requirements. Receives technical advice and/or guidance from supervisor and/or appropriate subject matter experts/professionals. May plan schedule and assist with directing the work of lower or lateral level technicians. May train and be assisted by lower level technicians. Duties will be varied.

Essential Responsibilities:

1) Plans, lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs and repairs metal body parts necessary to recondition and modify mobile and non-mobile equipment.

2) Modify body parts.

3) Install items required by various Maintenance Work Order Requests (MWOR's), such as cabs, cowls, aprons, doors, bodies, hoods, various metal containers and frames.

4) Provide coordination, on-the-job assistance, and/or limited technical direction to employees performing similar work.

5) Plan and schedule work from authorized work orders and perform quality assurance and quality control functions in process and upon completion.

6) Perform routine and non-routine troubleshooting/problem identification and resolution.

7) Respond to various types of emergencies and provide assistance as appropriate based on skills, knowledge, and ability.

Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Duties involve continuous standing, walking, stooping and kneeling. Requires climbing on vehicles and ladders, use of both hands and lifting and carrying of materials. Work is performed largely inside, occasionally outside; shops are equipped with proper light, heat and ventilation. Subject to high noise level from power equipment and hammering; welding fumes; and to injury in use of equipment, hand and power tools. Protective equipment such as goggles, gloves, safety shoes are worn as necessary for safety. Will work inside/outside in various weather conditions. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance. Position may require travel.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or GED and specific training and thorough knowledge in the particular area of facility maintenance, plus a broad knowledge of other disciplines such as general math, etc. Minimum qualifications of five (5) years documented, verifiable work experience in the metal mechanic field. Good written and spoken communication and analytical skills and a working knowledge of basic computer systems and software programs is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Must have a high school diploma, valid driver's license, and be a United States Citizen.
