The Successor Programme will deliver a new generation of submarines to carry the UK's nuclear deterrent. It is the largest programme in Defence with a budget of £34 billion. We are responsible for manufacturing 22 tactical missile tube assemblies as part of the common missile compartment (CMC) project for the UK Successor and US Ohio Class replacement submarine programmes. This highly specialised, internationally significant work is part of the second phase of the project at Rosyth and places Babcock as a critical supplier of missile tube assemblies, utilising our core skills and expertise delivering part of a programme to support the future deterrent submarines for both the UK and US Navies.

The role
As a Fabricator, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. If you can bring technical skills and a safe working attitude, then we can provide you with one of the most exciting engineering projects this country has to offer.

Day-to-day, you'll be expected to undertake general fabrication activities including below:

  • Structural steel fabrication
  • Working with high tolerances
  • Lining out and marking off
  • Interpretation of drawings, and specifications, for fabrication work
  • Grinding, burning and drilling
  • Use of disc cutters, guillotine and band saws
  • Arc air gouging
  • Tack welding
  • Making moulds and Templates
  • Fabrication and fitting ventilation

This role is approximately 39 hours per week over a working time shift pattern,and will include an additional shift premium. We are happy to discuss this in more detail.

Essential experience of the Fabricator:
  • You'll have the ability to read engineering drawings and interpret work instructions, be competent in the use of handheld and semi-automatic burning equipment and general workshop machinery and tools specific to fabricating (grinders, disc cutters, guillotines and band saws).
  • The Successor project has a requirement for Fabricators with experience in Plate Development, Rolling, cutting and forming of carbon, Stainless and Nickel alloy heavy fabrications.
  • Ideally, will have worked in the marine industry with experience of Royal Navy ships and submarines, Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels or large commercial ships - although other relevant experience will be considered.
  • Experienced in heavy fabrications for the oil, Gas, Petrochem, Nuclear and/or Defence Industries.

Qualifications of the Fabricator (at least one of the following):
  • Indentured Apprenticeship
  • Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship in a sheet metal, structural steel or fabrication related discipline
  • Level 3 Engineering qualification relevant to the role

Please note that this position is subject to national security vetting. The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements for this role (this will include obtaining SC level of security clearance).
